The Artist

Max Kehl

Maximilian Theodor Kehl (b. 1991) is a Munich-based artist specializing in portraiture through drawing and printmaking. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich (2019), his work explores the delicate balance between minimalistic realism and expressive detail. Kehl’s drawings, often based on photographs or video stills, transform the fleeting moments of human expression into refined, contemplative works. His practice focuses on the directness of the medium, capturing the essence of his subjects with subtle lines and an emphasis on materiality. Recent exhibitions include the “Munich Master Class” at the Kunstforum der Münchner Bank (2022), and collaborations with the Erl Opera Festival. Kehl’s work reflects his ongoing fascination with the ability of a few simple marks to evoke a complex sense of presence and identity.
