Max Pechstein was released from military service at the beginning of 1917. This release led to intensive work in his studio over the course of the year. Two woodcut portfolios were created: the cycle “Ein Dorf” (A Village), to which this woodcut belongs, published by J.B. Neumann, and the collection “Woodcuts 1919” (Woodcuts 1919) by Fritz Gurlitt Verlag. The “A Village” cycle is dedicated to the Baltic Sea resort of Prerow, near which, in Ahrenshoop, Pechstein spent a relaxing holiday in May 1918. At least, the shape of the church on the cover of the portfolio suggests this. The farmhouses depicted are typical of those on the Darss peninsula.
