Monotype on white paper. Signed by the artist and dated 1989 lower right in pencil. Annotated G verso. Condition is as new except for a small pinhole in each corner.

Printed in green, black, and grey, this monotype on mould-made paper features the shaded underpass of a bridge. High arches stretch across the width of the composition, painted in wide swaths of translucent ink. Fine lines define detail on the bridge’s abutments. A wide walkway lined with greenery extends beyond the archway.

Found images serve as frequent sources for Zalopany’s large-scale realism. Here, the artist’s strokes of translucent ink build to deep blacks and hazy greys, lending this found landscape a dreamlike quality. A swath of ink defines the panels of sunlight cast across the ground, showcasing the artist’s trademark mastery of light and dark.

The Artist

Michele Zalopany

Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes — family snapshots, police photos, real estate, travel documentation — when rendered, directly from the image, with traditional art materials, take on additional meanings, such as socio-psychological-political content.
