Lithograph on smooth, handmade Kizuki Hosho paper with pale yellow watercolor border. Edition 30: this impression 22/30. Signed by the artist, dated 1988 and numbered 22/30 lower right in pencil.

Here, a group of children is bundled up in hats, gloves, and jackets. This finely-drawn lithograph features Zalopany’s characteristic mastery of light and dark, from the bright winter sunlight catching the children’s hats, to the knit texture of their gloves in shadow. The heart patterns on the children’s hats are a tender addition to this intimate portrait. Chine-collé was used to produce this print, a technique in which an image is printed onto one sheet of paper, then seamlessly affixed to another, highlighting the texture and color of both sheets. In Children, a bright white background highlights Zalopany’s rich, dimensional drawing style, while a pale-yellow paper subtly frames the image.

The Artist

Michele Zalopany

Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes — family snapshots, police photos, real estate, travel documentation — when rendered, directly from the image, with traditional art materials, take on additional meanings, such as socio-psychological-political content.
