Monotype on white mould-made paper. Signed by the artist, annotated “E”, and dated 1990 lower right in pencil.

This large, colorful mountain and river landscape monotype depicts a secluded inlet or river flanked by rocky banks. Terra-cotta, yellow, brown, green and grey hued cliffs rise behind brilliant sapphire water. Green brush dots the water’s shores, and a deep blue sky is textured with navy blue dots, bounded by black-tipped crags. The translucency of the ink is showcased by the artist’s loose, painterly brush strokes, which create rich layers of color and texture. The imagery of On the Map is taken from an old picture book.

The Artist

Michele Zalopany

Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes — family snapshots, police photos, real estate, travel documentation — when rendered, directly from the image, with traditional art materials, take on additional meanings, such as socio-psychological-political content.
