“Inmitten von Halunken und Getier [In the midst of scoundrels and animals] is the title of the etching by Nschotschi Haslinger (*1982 in Eitdorf, lives in Berlin) for PROVINZ.
The scene we see has a theatrical staging; the atmosphere is intense and like a reinterpretation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. The close-packed arrangement of quirky details endorse this. Then there are sandals that sport cut-off feet, the drawing counterpart to one-of-a-kind ceramic sculptures, four different pairs of which are on offer.
Haslinger’s works often function like fairy tales and, like these, are highly charged psychologically. The complex themes to which they are devoted, like obsession, sexuality, gender roles, loss and coming together, appear here as natural sequences that cannot be circumvented and therefore should not be feared. Haslinger’s pictures are first of all about the appeal of putting oneself on show, of being seen and of voyeurist pleasure.
