When we hear the name Otto Mueller, our minds immediately conjure up images of bathers in the reeds on the one hand, and the scenes of the creator of the “Gypsy Portfolio” on the other. Indeed, his joint work stays with Heckel and Kirchner at the Moritzburg Ponds in 1911, and with Kirchner subsequently in Bohemia and on Fehmarn in 1913, were groundbreaking for his work. Conversely, Mueller’s interpretation of the nudes and vegetation also seems to have influenced the work of Heckel and especially Kirchner. However, only Otto Mueller was able to place trees so dominantly in the foreground, relegating the bathers to mere staffage figures as in this composition.
