Part of our exhibition ‘Architecture, Sculpture & Performance: American Modernist Photos’.
Spanning 1946-1976, our selection of American Modernist photographs captures significant 20th-century artists and their work. The exhibition begins with Pedro E Guerrero’s photos of Frank Lloyd Wright and his famous buildings, both interiors and exteriors. Guerrero had exclusive access to Wright as his personal photographer for the last 20 years of his life. One depiction of the fastidious architect at work shows the construction of his desert home, Taliesen West, with Wright in a three piece suit.
Through Wright Guerrero met and did portraits of Alexander Calder, who can be seen here painting mobiles and at home with his grandchild. Finally, Peter J. Moore documented performance art in New York throughout the 1960s, and the exhibition presents his pictures of the temporal work of Jim Dine, Robert Morris and Robert Whitman.
