UK based artist Peter Liversidge asks institutions to join him in making utopian proposals as part of Spirit of Utopia, a Whitechapel Gallery group show featuring ten artists and collectives from around the world and bringing together an assembled exploration the ‘what if’ scenario. The limited edition, Proposal for Whitechapel Editions, is a diptych: part manually type-written, part silver-leafed; the proposals have each been framed by Darbyshire Framers and were produced exclusively for the Whitechapel Gallery to mark and accompany this extraordinary group show.
Peter Liversidge begins the plans for each of his exhibitions at his kitchen table, typing proposals on an old typewriter. The resulting pages, complete with typos and hand-written notes, form an array of possible, and sometimes impossible, propositions for artworks, which in turn, collectively form the initial piece in every Liversidge exhibition. This process encapsulates the artist’s working interests, by creating a body of work that is universally accessible, allowing the viewer themselves to read the successful and unsuccessful proposals, and act as part of the curatorial process whilst engaging almost directly with the artist’s mind.
