Rachel Whiteread creates elegant and poetic sculptures which explore architecture, space, absence and memory. Often inspired by the physicality of the human body, her works are poignant for their exploration of intimate domestic spaces and household objects. Typically her sculptures are casts of the negative space surrounding or within an object. She is also a prolific draughtsman and printmaker, her two-dimensional work shares the primary concerns of her sculptures: texture and surface; void and presence; and the subtle observation of human traces in everyday life.

The present limited edition is derived and closely based on the artist’s series of postcard works that are altered through different kinds of erasure. Its an approach to making an image that Rachel describes as attempting to make the space disappear whilst preserving the integrity of the architecture.

For the creation of this artwork, Whiteread selected a vintage postcard, which has then been reproduced as a hand printed facsimile using photographic methods and paper as close as possible to that used for the fabrication of the original. The piece has then been carefully perforated following a proscribed pattern using a hand punch of varying diameter. It was clear to the artist that how this work could be presented and framed was an important part of the edition, and she specified a very simple, minimal white spray frame which has been produced by the premier framing company Darbyshire.

The Artist

Rachel Whiteread

English sculpture artist Rachel Whitebread was born in 1963 in Essex, and was the first woman to win the esteemed Turner Prize, in 1993. She primarily produces casts, a technique that involves pouring liquids such as plaster or molten metal into a mould and allowed the piece to set. During the 1980s she studied at the Slade School of Art in London, graduating with an MA in 1987. She began to exhibit in that same year, with her first solo exhibition coming in 1988. Whitebread was one of the acclaimed Young British Artists that were part of the Royal Academy’s 1997 Sensation exhibition.
