Ralph Steadman’s take on Pablo Picasso’s famous 1906 painting belongs to the ‘Picasso 347 Suite Homage,’ a series of prints that tribute the Spanish artist by referring to some of his most well-known works. A skilled and prolific printmaker, Picasso worked on the ‘347 Suite’ at the age of 86, completing its 347 prints in six months.
Demoiselles D’Avignon teases out the drawing at the heart of the painting, reworking it in a dynamic image where Steadman’s energetic line carries the weight of the composition. The pale blue colour of the print is not a dye: it is achieved by first printing a black rectangle onto the paper, and then superimposing the linocut design in white ink, which creates the unique blue tint. Picasso himself invented and used the technique.
