This woodblock printmaker combines traditional woodblock printmaking with his unique style. Having begun as an oil painter of abstract works, Morimura is unusual in using oil-based inks rather than the traditional water-based inks. His images are usually of traditional real life landscapes, but he combines this with geometric and abstract patterns bringing a modern angle to the images. This print depicts the pine fields of Miho, Shizuoka Prefecture and is reminiscent of a similar scene done by ukio-e master Hiroshige. Morimura’s intricate woodblock carvings exemplify minute details. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
