In 1994 Robert Indiana was commissioned by the Sao Paulo Biennial to make a limited edition print. “Amor” (“Love” in Portuguese) was produced at Vinalhaven Press in Maine, USA. It is a color aquatint printed from 2 copper plates on Rives BFK paper in an edition of 50. The available impression is one of three signed Printer’s Proof given by the artist to the seller in partial compensation for his work in making the plates and printing the edition. The print is signed, titled and dated in pencil and designated as P.P. 3/3. The Vinalhaven Press blindstamp is impressed into the bottom right margin. The available impression is identical to the prints in the edition except that the right vertical margin is 1 inch wider than the left.

The Artist

Robert Indiana

Pop artist Robert Indiana created the iconic ‘LOVE’ print that is still widely used today for cards, posters and other media. It was originally produced as the 1965 Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The US postal service used it as the basis for a stamp in 1973 and Indiana used the same graphic idea for reproductions that replaced ‘Love’ with the word ‘Hope’ as a fundraiser for Barak Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. This project raised more than $ 1,000,000.
