“Ah! It’s a monster!” a teacher who was walking around the precincts of Zuiganji Temple in Matsushima shouts. “It’s a frog! It’s a frog!”
A spectacular print by Munakata depicting the frog and stone statues at Zuigan-ji temple. Zuiganji Temple is a temple of the Rinzai sect in Matsushima and is also known as ‘Seiryuzan Zuiganji Enfukuji Temple’. According to the Temple’s company, it was founded in the 2nd year of Emperor Junna (824), and was first known as Matsushima Temple.
An exquisite lithograph produced on a very textural Japanese ‘washi’ paper, published by Yasukawa as part of their collaborative calendar project.
