Diverses exercices de cavalerie, the set of 19 plates including title
Etchings, ca. 1642/45. De Vesme 227-245, no. 243 in the first state of two, the others in De Vesme’s only state. T. Ortolani, in his supplement to the above (1996), notes that A. Forlani Tempesta cites the existence in a private Florentine collection of a third state in which 12 of the plates have a number added in the lower right (Paragone, 1973, no. 279).
Fine to very fine impressions. Most trimmed on the platemarks, five with small margins. 83-89 x 65-71mm.
The set $3,500
Massar proposes that the series may have been issued to mark the occasion when the seven-year-old Louis XIV began to take riding lessons, therefore they would date to 1645.
