The Artist

Tabaimo

A contemporary artist born in 1975, Tabaimo graduated from the Kyoto University of Art and Design in 1999. “Japanese Kitchen,” an installation utilizing animation that she created for her graduation, was awarded the grand prize in the Kirin Contemporary Award for that year. Her activities span a wide range of fields. She has shown works at numerous international exhibits, from the 1st Yokohama Triennale in 2001 to the 54th Venice Biennale, for which she was selected to contribute works for the Japan Pavilion, in 2011. Her main solo exhibits were “Yoroyoron” (Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, 2006), “Tabaimo” (Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, 2007), “DANMEN” (Yokohama Museum of Art, 2009, and National Museum of Art, Osaka, 2010), “MEKURU MEKU” (Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, 2014), “Her Room” (San Jose Museum of Art, 2016), and “Utsutsushiutsushi” (Seattle Asian Art Museum, 2016). In recent years, she has also been involved in projects of collaboration in works for the stage, as exemplified by “FURO,” a piece created with Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company; “The Love Suicides at Sonezaki” an adaptation of Chikamatsu’s classic “bunraku” puppet play written and produced by Hiroshi Sugimoto, for which she contributed animation; and “Sabi kara Deta Mi” (“Fruit from Rust”), a video play that she prepared and produced in 2016. * Titles in parentheses are tentative translations.
