The present work by Takashi Murakami, renowned for his super-charged mix of Pop, animé, and otaku within a highly-stylised picture-plane, layers a range of Japanese cultural and religious influences. Describing how flowers became an integral part of his work, Murakami stated, “At the beginning, to be frank, I didn’t like flowers, but as I continued teaching in the school, my feelings changed: their smell, their shape–it all made me feel almost physically sick, and at the same time I found them very ‘cute.’ Each one seems to have its own feelings, its own personality.”

“Cube” reflects his simultaneous expression of resentment and compulsive adoration, as the intensely saturated pattern both overwhelms and excites in this homage to the era of earlier Japanese printmaking from the 19th century. Murakami is the founder of the postmodern art movement, “Superflat,” which combines elements of Japanese culture with the flattening of the image.
