The Artist

Terry O'Neill

Over his long career as a photographer, Terry O’Neill has built up a unique body of work. Born Terence Patrick O’Neill in London in 1938, he grew up to find employment as a photographer at Heathrow Airport. From here he progressed to working regularly in journalism, initially for The Daily Sketch in 1959. His first job there was to photograph Sir Laurence Olivier. Quickly gaining a reputation as a highly skilled photographer, he went on to shoot pictures of 1960s stars like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Judy Garland. Some of his most well-known pictures are the ones he took of Elton John. Alongside this, he photographed politicians and members of the British royal family. He had a long relationship with the American actress Faye Dunaway. They were married from 1983 to 1986, and their son Liam was born in 1980. Terry took many pictures of Faye, some of which are established as his most iconic. His singular vision is evident throughout his artistic output, which is evident in the many photo books he has released, including Legends in 1987, and Eltonography in 2008. The retrospective book Terry O’Neill: Every Picture Tells a Story was published in 2016. He lives in London with his wife Laraine Ashton.
