This artist is one of the most internationally acclaimed contemporary artists in Japan. She passed away at the age of 107 in March 2021. All her works are based on abstract but dynamic brush strokes originating from Japanese calligraphy. To Shinoda, the concept and utilisation of the untouched space on the paper is as important as the brush strokes and becomes one with the image. Her lithographs are stone-based and she uses traditional Japanese sumi ink for the brush strokes. She adds hand-colouring to each of her prints in the edition, in this using gold ink. She completed her last lithograph in 2007, and currently focuses on one-off brush stroke paintings. Her works are in the permanent collections of major museums including the British Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY.
