Trenton Doyle Hancock came to Flatbed in the fall of 2003 to create the artist portfolio known as “Bye and Bye: Nine Sad Etchings.” The portfolio captures a time in Hancock’s 50,000-year metanarrative when the Mound Legend has died and the animals of the forest and creatures of the sea come to eulogize him. Hancock approaches the images chosen for this artist book in a cinematic way. First image is of the dead Mound Core, its skelloton. The second shows a “close-up.” Next there comes the line of animals with their text as a part of the image until there is a “Grand Finale” of animals saying goodbye. The colophon and title page were printed with letterpress plates created with Trenton’s own writing.
The artist-designed clamshell box created to house the pages measures 18 1/4 x 14 3/4 x 1 1/4 inches. Each page is 17 x 14 inches and the images measure 8 x 10 inches.
