The essence of Ruth’s practice is hand drawn, screen printed illustrations, rewriting historical narratives within her prints to give them contemporary relevance. Her illustrative landscapes convey more sinister meanings shrouded in decorative beauty. Taking her lead from 14th century French tapestry and Chinese woodcut, she conveys current world issues, re-inventing the use of symbolism in a modern age.
Having recently graduated from The Royal College of Art, Ruth is working between her own studio and East London printmakers to develop her work. She celebrates traditional printing techniques through her illustrations textiles and ceramics. An exciting natural progression of her work over the last few years which has been heavily influenced by the years she spent living in Shanghai. Her research into Chinese ancient art and woodblock transformed her visual language and awaked her to connect with storytelling from her own cultural heritage.
