This original screenprint in colours is hand signed in pencil by the artist “Indiana” at the lower right corner. It is also dated “’68” [ 1968] next to the signature.
It is hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 100, at the lower left margin.
There were also 20 artist’s proofs numbered with Roman numerals.
It was printed by Domberger KG, Stuttgart and published by Rolf-Günter Dienst at Edition Plus, Baden Baden.
This work was included in the portfolio “Graphik USA”, one of eight compositions published in 1968. The other contributing artists include Allan D’Archangelo, Marvin Israel, Alfred Jenson, Richard Lindner, Ad Reinhardt, Tom Wesslemann and Mario Yrissary.

Note: Several nations are honoured by the colours of their flag appearing in special editions of ‘Love’ such as Germany, America and Estonia. The first time the stacked letters were published was when the design was selected to be the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) Christmas card design for 1965. The word has also been translated into Hebrew, for a special sculpture at Israel Museum of Art in Jerusalem, with the four-letter word Ahava (אהבה “love” in Hebrew). It also appears in Valencia in Spanish with the four-letter word Amor.

Condition: Very good condition. A soft scuff at the extreme lower right sheet edge.

The Artist

Robert Indiana

Pop artist Robert Indiana created the iconic ‘LOVE’ print that is still widely used today for cards, posters and other media. It was originally produced as the 1965 Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The US postal service used it as the basis for a stamp in 1973 and Indiana used the same graphic idea for reproductions that replaced ‘Love’ with the word ‘Hope’ as a fundraiser for Barak Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. This project raised more than $ 1,000,000.
