Thomas Kilpper: Woodcut Maelstrom, 2024
New, large-format woodcuts by Thomas Kilpper (born 1956 in Stuttgart, lives in Berlin) can be seen at the Kunsthalle Bremen from November 9, 2024 to March 9, 2025. Together with woodcuts by two other contemporaries of Kilpper, these works of 21st century art are juxtaposed with prints using the same technique by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Kilpper covers an entire hall with it and draws visitors into his multi-part work “Woodcut Maelstrom”. The artist portrays a number of personalities who represent their socio-political commitment. The figures in the picture each present a historical woodcut by an artist that can be linked in a special way in terms of content. Provinz is pleased to be able to offer you a selection of motifs from this almost encyclopedic work. All of them are format or color variations of the respective unique pieces from the same printing block.
Thomas Kilpper studied at the academies in Nuremberg and Frankfurt am Main under Alfonso Hüppi and Georg Herold. He has been honored with numerous prizes and scholarships, e.g. 2004 HAP Grieshaber Prize from the Bonn Art Fund Foundation, 2011 Prize from the Villa Romana, Florence. In addition to his interventions, his works have also been recognized internationally in institutional solo exhibitions such as 2016 BOZAR/Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels, 2015 National Gallery, Oslo, 2012 Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen and many more. Thomas Kilpper is a professor at the Academy of Art and Design in Bergen, Norway. He lives in Berlin and runs the exhibition space “after the butcher” here.
