“I began working with Wildwood press in 2008 and we made five images. In 2009 while in St. Louis, where Wildwood has its’ studio, we began working on another print. I had a very clear idea about THAW. I have been living in the mountains of Southwest Montana for over thirty years. It is cold and snowy here and the winters can easily last for six months. Then comes the thaw, the snow begins to melt and there is a layer of ice which slowly melts. Under the ice is the Spring, the potential for the return of green and a more colorful world. Plants, animals and we humans all sense this return. Easy Living again. This will take an incredible amount of patience, as the process unfurls, it can feel like two steps forward and one or two backwards.

I thought the image of THAW and the whole notion of the image was very fitting for the world economies in the Fall of 2009. I am sorry to report we are still thawing out while the Earth seems to be getting warmer. “

The Artist

Anne Appleby

Anne Appleby (b. 1954, Harrisburg, PA) studied at Philadelphia College of Art before relocating to Montana in 1971, subsequently earning her BFA at the University of Montana, Missoula, and eventually establishing a studio and residence in the sparsely populated community of Jefferson City. In addition to receiving her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1989, Appleby’s educational background includes a fifteen-year apprenticeship with Ojibwa artist and holy man Ed Barbeau, with whom she learned and refined processes of intense meditative awareness in nature. The tenor of Appleby’s work reflects the sensation of that observational practice and resides at the core of her philosophical approach to painting.
