Additional Information: This original lithograph in colours is hand signed by the artist in pencil “P. Delvaux” at the lower right margin. It is also inscribed “H/C.” in pencil, a Hors Commerce [out of trade] impression aside from the standard edition of 150. The work was printed by Atelier Mourlot, Paris in a limited edition of 75 hand signed and numbered impressions. It was co-published by Propyläen, Berlin, and Galerie Le Bateau Lavoir, Paris, with the latter’s blindstamp.

Note: This lithograph was created for the inclusion in the deluxe edition of a republished Das Meerwunder [The Sea Monsters] by the Silesian born German author Gerhart Hauptmann. The subject of the siren passed into popular German culture in the 19th Century throught the stories, poems and classical compositions telling the story of the golden haired Lorelei of the Rhine.

Provenance: Mrs Mira Jacob, Galerie le Bateau-Lavoir, Paris. The Mira Jacob Collection is one of the most complete collections of prints by Paul Delvuax in private hands. Madame Mira Jacob Wolfovska (1912–2004) was a renowned figure in the Parisian art world, and her gallery Le Bateau Lavoir, located on the rue de Seine, was famous for its exhibitions of Surrealist art, of which she was a passionate advocate. Mrs Mira Jacob was also the author of the Paul Delvaux graphic work catalogue raisonne that was published in 1976.

The Artist

Paul Delvaux

Belgian Paul Delvaux was born in 1897 and was famed as a surrealist painter. As a young man he read classic works such as Homer, and would sketch mythological scenes inspired by his reading. Despite pressure from his parents to study architecture, Delvaux was committed to a career in fine art and chose to study at the Belgian Academy of Arts in Brussels, enrolling in several art classes.
