The Artist

Carl Wilhelm Kolbe the Elder

Berlin 1759 – 1835 Dessau
Kolbe was thirty years old when the German engraver Chodowiecki convinced him to become a full-time artist. His early works were in the style of Waterloo, but he soon found his own artistic personality. Some of his most beautiful etchings were those executed in Zurich between 1806 and 1811 after works of Conrad Gessner (Zurich 1764 – 1826 Zurich).
