The twin brothers, Gert and Uwe Tobias, have worked as a team since their studies under Prof. Walter Dahn at the University of Art Braunschweig (HBK), who are known worldwide for their narratival, large-scale, and highly colorful woodcuts. The symbolism of their works is fed from a complex interplay between varying elements. Art history is cited, primarily that of Classical Modernism and Art Brut. They set up everyday pictorial worlds in relationship to fantasy and, e.g., to the folk art of the artists’ Transylvanian homeland. In their current multicolored lithographs for Provinz, the native fairytale figures and animal creatures that dominate the illustrated goings-on are staged in an intense, counterbalanced glow of colors. This concentration on the interchange between composition and content—both have equal weight—is expressly significant for their figurative as well as for their abstract works.
Gert und Uwe Tobias‘ (born. 1973 in Brasov, Romania, live and work in Cologne) works were shown in numerous museum exhibitions worldwide, recently at Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, Sprengel Museum, Hannover, (2016); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2016), Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle, Belgium (2014), Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK (2013) or Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA (2008).
