Ralph Steadman’s ‘Weeping Woman’ challenges the viewer to look again. Neither copy or simple homage, rather cousin to his close friend Hunter S Thompson’s method when he re-typed Fitzgerald and Hemmingway to feel what writing a great novel was like.
Greatness is an earned appraisal Ralph Steadman merits. His ‘Weeping Woman’ captures the special energy Picasso’s line always communicates. Hugely reminiscent of Picasso, this tragic figure is a beautiful tribute to one of Ralph’s heroes.
Part of the ‘Picasso 347 Suite Homage’, a series of prints that tribute the Spanish artist by referring to some of his most well-known works. A skilled and prolific printmaker, Picasso worked on the ‘347 Suite’ at the age of 86, completing its 347 prints in six months.
Steadman was inspired to copy his hero and was determined to go one better by creating 547 images in 5 months.
