“unique” by WRDSMTH, the anonymous street artist best known for his inspirational messages tagged across major cities in iconic vintage typeface. Joining two separate floating canvases that together mimic the form of a typewriter, the piece showcases WRDSMTH’s distinct aptitude for generating witty and uplifting sentiments, and conveying them with concision. The upper of the two canvases functions as a sheet of white paper, reading “Being unique is the one thing we all have in common.” in black text. Placed strategically below it is the second segment of the piece, which contains the bright red figure of a typewriter, cut out of a dark gray background. The artwork is signed by the artist, and the two canvases are displayed in sleek black floating frames.

Anonymous author and artist WRDSMTH has been tagging his “WRDS” in public spaces for less than a decade. After what he calls “Doing Time in Hollywood” as a writer in the entertainment industry, WRDSMTH began making his mark as a street artist in 2013. Known for his distinctive old-fashioned typewriter icon, WRDSMTH combines spray-painted stencils with pithy, inspirational, and often romantic messages dedicated to those “chasing the dream.” “The only lie I ever told you is that I liked you when I already knew I loved you.” “Aspire to inspire others and the universe will take note.” Messages like these made WRDSMTH a uniquely positive and graphically iconic presence in Southern California.
After amassing an explosive following on Instagram, WRDSMTH presented his first gallery-based solo show, “I’d Like To Have A WRD With You,” in Los Angeles in 2017. Like his street art, WRDSMTH’s canvases utilize mixed media and text, all inspired by his life and career as a writer. Outside of California, WRDSMTH’s tags can be found in international cities, including New York, Seattle, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Memphis, Miami, Toronto, London, Paris, Berlin, Kraków, Edinburgh, Melbourne, Tokyo, and Auckland.
