Well-known for her use of repetitive and accumulative motifs, Yayoi Kusama’s artistic practice spans paintings, sculptures, installations and other artistic fields. While her immersive installation works fascinate audiences around the world, her works on paper reflect equally intriguing sensibilities. In this series of prints made between 2011 and 2012, Kusama repeats motifs of eyes, face profiles and organisms atop backgrounds of bold colours. In contrast with the fine detail in her earlier prints, the improvised expression of free lines as well as the textured surface of the paper used here surprises the viewer. Amidst this, her signature style remains, making all her works instantly recognisable.
