Influenced by elements of popular culture, Yoshitomo Nara creates paintings, sculptures, and drawings of adorable-yet-sinister childlike characters. As one of the fathers and central figures of the Japanese neo-Pop movement, Nara’s work expresses the struggle to find an identity fractured by war, rapid modernization, and an omnipresent visual culture. Yoshitomo Nara’s distinctive style that draws on both classical Japanese woodcuts and pulp/pop comics. Using children as metaphors for the decline of society, Nara expresses contemporary concerns towards an unknown future through images of wide-eyed children posed in ironic yet playful situations.

The Mellow Girl is typical of Nara’s works, which recall childhood scenes and cartoon-like figures. This piece is sold in excellent condition from a limited edition of just 50 (signed and numbered) and comes framed.
