This original etching and aquatint in colours is hand signed in pencil by the artist in Chinese and Pinyin at the lower right margin and dated in pencil next to the signature ‘693’ [1968]. It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 114, at the lower left margin. This etching and aquatint was printed by Imprimerie Arte, Paris and published in a limited edition of 114 signed and numbered impressions by Jean-Robert Arnaud, Paris.

Note: This subject is one of ten published in the folio ‘La peau des choses’ [The Skin of Things] in 1968. The folio also included works by Huguette-Arthur Bertrand, Cesar, Émile Gilioli, James Guitet, Hans Hartung, John-Franklin Koenig, Gérard Schneider, Pierre Soulages and Victor Vasarely.

The Artist

Zao Wou-ki

Influenced by the works of Matisse, Picasso, Paul Klee and Cézanne, Zao Wou-ki’s distinctive paintings were abstract in style. He used vivid colour palettes alongside light and dark areas in his work to produce intense big-bang-like images. Zao studied calligraphy in his hometown Dantu, and later, painted at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou under Fang Ganmin and Wu Dayu.
