1978 witnessed the birth of the first test-tube baby as well as Egypt and Israel signing the Camp David Accords. NASA unveiled the first group of women astronauts and Japanese explorer Naomi Uemura became the first person to reach the North Pole. Spain restored its democracy and ended forty years of a dictatorship under Francisco Franco. 1978 also saw Illinois Bell Company introducing the first ever cellular mobile phone system, Sweden becoming the first nation to ban aerosol sprays and Volkswagen ceasing production of the Beetle having manufactured 20 million cars.
People in 1978 would hear Stayin’ Alive and Night Fever on the radio and would go and see Grease, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the Revenge of the Pink Panther at the movies.
