Collage in Prints
A guest curated show by Josh Pazda, director of Hiram Butler Gallery (IFPDA).
“Some of the first prints I worked with as a dealer were Robert Rauschenberg’s Shirtboards, 1991. Shirtboards were an extraordinarily complex technical feat, in which 28 of Rauschenberg’s collages from 1952 were recreated as facsimiles, at a larger scale. All of the irregularities of the unique collages were carefully recreated: glue stains, pencil marks, printed materials….etc. Working with these prints redefined my understanding of printmaking entirely.
I am interested in how collage elements push the boundaries of what we consider prints to be. Sometimes a collage element asserts each impression’s uniqueness. Collage can also be painstakingly precise and maintain continuity from impression to impression, throughout an edition. I have chosen a variety of works that incorporate collage in ways that are subtle, classic, experimental, and masterfully technical.”
