Shark’s Ink Celebrating 40 Years

Shark’s Ink is proud to be celebrating 40 years of printing and publishing.

Since 1976, when we began printing as Shark’s Lithography Ltd, through the last 40 years of publishing prints as Shark’s Ink, we have collaborated with a distinguished group of more than 160 artists from the United States and Europe.

We invite artists whose work pursues a strong personal vision to make prints at Shark’s. These relationships continue over many projects with artists returning regularly to collaborate on new prints. Many of the artists have produced large bodies of work over their years of collaborating with Shark’s.

The prints produced at Shark’s Ink are an eclectic group that use unusual and inventive printmaking techniques. Artists approach the process in many ways. Some arrive at the Shark’s studio with maquettes or drawings, others with a suitcase full of reference materials and some with an only an idea.

Processes used in the studio have included lithography; monotype- using watercolor, oil pastels and other materials; metal leaf, chine collé, embossing and collage, as well as innumerable innovations for cutting and printing woodblocks and other relief prints; and the engineering and construction of three-dimensional lithographs. We devise unique methods and materials for realizing the challenging projects artists propose.

Bud Shark, Master Printer, was born in Devils Lake, North Dakota. He received a BS from University of Wisconsin, Madison and an MA from University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. After four years in London printing for Editions Alecto and Petersburg Press he returned to the US. In 1976, he opened Shark’s Lithography Ltd in Boulder, Colorado, and relocated the studio as Shark's Ink. to Lyons, Colorado in 1998.
