Through drawing and printmaking Ian Chamberlain reinterprets man-made structures as monuments in the landscape. He has a long-standing fascination with technology and architectural forms, especially structures within industry, agriculture, science and the military. Past works include studies of Goonhilly Earth Station, the Lovell Telescope, the Cheshire Maunsell Sea Forts and the Acoustic Sound Mirrors on the South Kent Coast. He uses an inter-disciplinary approach, combining drawn, photographic and hand-printing methods. Etching is an extension of his drawing, interlinking the various processes.
Chamberlain was awarded the Flourish Print Award in 2024. UK collections include: The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Tate Modern, London; Bristol Museum; Royal West of England Academy, Bristol; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; The University of Chichester collection; The Ashmolean, Oxford University; and Chippenham Museum, Wiltshire. In addition to his studio practice he is a researcher and Senior Lecturer in MFA Printmaking at The University of the West of England, Bristol, UK.
