Kiki Smith is an American artist born in Germany 1954. She is a pre-eminent figure in the artistic movement that unites the human condition the natural world. Working across a range of media including photography, drawing, printing and painting, she has explored explores self-portraiture, anatomy and female iconography. Her Feminist art is concerned with the cultural and political roles of women. Her images are often disturbing depictions of the human body.
In the 1980s, her work drew on subjects such as AIDS and gender. Her more recent works express the gap between man and nature. Deriving from ancient stories and folk tales, she reinterprets them as works of art. Much of her work portrays a sense of storytelling. Themes of life and death are reflected in her work, as encompassed in the piece Life, Death and Resurrection. Smith’s unconventional work has invited audiences to embrace the unconventional. Kiki Smith has become recognised around the globe, exhibiting in over 25 museum and galleries, featuring in the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2006 she was featured in TIME magazine as on of the ‘TIME 100: People Who Shape our World’, and she received the Honorary Royal Academician by the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 2017.
